11 Healthy Sleep Tips for Better Rest

Negative effects of sleep can have a huge impact on your health and how you function while you’re awake. We want to focus on the positive impacts of good sleep. We’ve outlined some really good sleep tips for anyone to follow, not just truckers or DOT drivers.

1. Keep a Regular Sleep Schedule

Sticking to a routine helps feed the natural habits our bodies create. Breaking those habits on days off or weekends doesn’t help our sleep schedule.

2. Stay Away from Caffeine and Nicotine

Caffeine is in a lot of substances today, from soft drinks, to tea, coffee and energy drinks. The effects of caffeine can take hours to wear off and if you’re drinking it late in the day, it can have a negative effect on your sleep. Nicotine, like caffeine, is a stimulant and can cause smokers to have light sleep. The withdrawals you get can even wake smokers up early in the morning.

3. No Late Afternoon Naps

Naps are great for catching up on sleep, but napping too late in the day can make it hard to get to sleep at night.

4. Stay Away from Beverages and Large Meals at Night

Eating large, heavy meals can cause indigestion and make it hard to sleep at night. Too much liquid can make for frequent trips to the bathroom at night, not allowing your body to get the deep sleep it needs.

5. Take Time to Relax and Unwind Before Bed

Find an activity that is away from electronic screens that will help you relax and unwind. Try listening to music, reading or meditating before going to bed.

6. Exercise More but Not Later

Exercising at least 30 minutes a day can help you sleep better but try not to do it within a few hours of your bedtime.

7. No Nightcaps

Drinking alcoholic beverages as a way to help you sleep may help you relax initially but will disrupt your REM sleep cycle. This is where you get your deep and restful sleep. Heavy drinking before bed can cause breathing issues and restlessness until the effects of the alcohol have worn off.

8. Know Your Medications

Some medications, both over the counter and prescribed, can affect sleep. Consult your doctor to find out what medications may be having an impact on your sleep.

9. Create a Perfect Sleep Space

Most people know how they like to sleep. Some like it warm or maybe on the cooler side. Find those variables and stick to them. If you travel, take your pillow with. Try to keep the electronics out of this space if possible, they can act as a distraction. Upgrading a mattress, sheets and pillow can make a big impact as well.

10. Can’t Sleep, Get Up

If you find yourself awake in bed for more than 20-25 minutes, get up and find a relaxing activity to help make you sleepy. Try soft music, reading or meditating.

11. Get Some Sun

Getting a regular dose of sunshine can help with your sleep patterns. Even 30 minutes a day can make an impact. Waking up to bright lights or natural sun and going to bed to dim lights can help keep sleeping patterns regular and may help you sleep better.
