The Prevalence of Sleep Apnea in Commercial Truck Drivers

Many studies, attempting to address the prevalence of sleep apnea in commercial drivers, have noted the relationship depends on several risk factors. Sleep apnea tens to be present in men who are over-weight, middle-aged and at risk for diabetes, hypertension or heart disease. A 2012 survey from Australia revealed that 40 percent of truck drivers have sleep apnea.

The prevalence of sleep apnea in commercial drivers poses a public safety risk. The common symptoms of sleep apnea are fatigue and daytime sleepiness, putting drivers with untreated sleep apnea at greater risk of falling asleep behind the wheel, resulting in traffic accidents. Sleep apnea is only one disease highlighted by the Department of Transportation. Other conditions impact truck drivers such as diabetes, lung disease, heart disease, seizures and substance abuse.

Who is at risk for sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea occurs in all age groups and both sexes, but there are certain factors that put a person at higher risk. A large neck size and increased body weight are both major factors of sleep apnea and common traits of commercial truck drivers. Add in being a man over 50, and the sleep apnea risk is considered significant.

Common risk factors:

• Large neck size

• Recessed chin, small jaw / large overbite

• Family history of sleep apnea

• Small upper airway

• Smoking and alcohol use

• Being overweight

• Age 40 or older

• High blood pressure

• Small upper airway

• Snore loudly
